These chess lessons are suitable for one hour sessions with near beginners.
- Logical Chess: Move By Move by Irving Chernev was my first chess book, which I read several times. The best feature of this book is that every single move is commented on.
- The Oxford Companion to Chess by David Hooper and Kenneth Whyld aims to be a comprehensive chess reference book, and has entries on major events, players, openings, tactics, problems and chess variants. The appendix contains a handy key for indentifying openings.
- Endgame Magic by John Beasley and Timothy Whitworth contains a collection of chess studies which is carefully chosen, arranged into sensible categories and well-explained.
